Practical approaches to localisation in peacebuilding
Localisation remains an increasingly important topic for international development, humanitarian aid and peacebuilding. Many international organisations and donors are recognising the importance of delivering operations that are truly responsive to local realities.
The Practical Approaches to Localisation project, funded by the Swedish Postcode Lottery Foundation, documents local realities and voices on localisation in peacebuilding and incorporates them into the international conversation around the topic.
We conducted an 18-month research project in four focus countries – Kenya, Rwanda, Lebanon, and Syria – where we have been working with local peacebuilders to create space for inclusive discussions between local actors.
What is included in the reports?
There are five reports, one from each country context and one global paper. The global paper brings together the findings from research conducted between November 2023 and July 2024. The Syria research was carried out by Alert’s partner Mobaderoon.
The outcomes are designed to provide guidance to donors, international non-governmental organisations, local NGOs and civil society organisations on how to provide effective support for localisation in peacebuilding projects and processes. It will also inform our future ways of working towards at International Alert.
