Ce rapport fait le bilan de la participation des femmes dans le Dialogue Inter-Congolais (DIC) et dans les élections générales de 2006. Le rapport montre que malgré leur faible représentation au Dialogue Inter-Congolais (DIC) à Sun City en Afrique du Sud, les femmes Congolaises sont quand même parvenues à faire inclure des dispositions favorables aux droits des femmes et au  principe de l’égalité des sexes dans l’Accord global et inclusif pour la RDC signé à Pretoria en 2002. Cependant aucune de ces dispositions n’ont été mises en œuvre.

The Great Lakes region has in the last ten to fifteen years seen an increase in women’s representation and involvement in politics and the public sphere, a positive outcome of the region’s peace processes and political transitions.

One of the positive outcomes of recent peace processes in Africa’s Great Lakes region has been the increased involvement of women in the public sphere, primarily thanks to the adoption of quota systems for female representation. Women have had some success in influencing official peace processes in the region, ensuring provisions for women’s rights were made. They have been actively engaged as both voters and candidates in elections, but few are elected.

International Alert is proud to present a new documentary film from our programme in Burundi, in the Great Lakes region of Africa.

Our Voices presents the views of Burundian women about what is needed to foster peace and development in the country.

Burundi emerged from more than a decade of civil war in 2005. During the conflict, over 300,000 people lost their lives and more than 1 million Burundians were forced to flee their homes.

In the context of an ongoing programme on Women’s Economic Empowerment, Alert co-organised a regional workshop with the Economic Community of the Great Lakes (CEPGL) and UN WOMEN on April 25th – 27th in Gisenyi, Rwanda.

Foreign Secretary William Hague announced this week a UK initiative on preventing sexual violence in conflict. This initiative, which forms part of the UK’s forthcoming Presidency of the G8 in 2013, will include the establishment of a dedicated UK team devoted to combating and preventing sexual violence in conflict.

Following on from the successful hosting of a “Peacebuilding School for Gender Activists” in August 2011, International Alert gathered together some of the most promising and talented young women activists from Armenia, Azerbaijan and Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh for a three-day workshop from 6th to 8th December, as part of a wider project funded by the US State Department.

Last week, the Democratic Republic of Congo went to the polls for the country’s second democratic elections, which have been marred by violence and tensions in many provinces since the start of the electoral campaign in October.

This report reviews different approaches to the implementation of international Women, Peace and Security frameworks, focusing particularly on UN Security Council Resolution 1325. It focuses on how the resolution can be incorporated into concrete policy guidelines and programmatic initiatives and highlights good practices and lessons learnt over the last decades.

Although Lebanon is known in the Middle East for its relative political openness and for the degree of freedom Lebanese women enjoy, it paradoxically has one of the lowest rates of women’s political engagement in the region. This report examines the extent to which women are currently involved in politics in Lebanon, as well as the opportunities for increasing their involvement, by drawing on Alert’s work with the youth wings of Lebanese political parties and a conference Alert held on the topic of promoting gender equality in political parties.

Long before UN Security Council Resolution 1325 came into existence, women in Liberia played an important and visible role in bringing an end to the country’s civil war. Women’s organisations and networks in Liberia therefore embody a significant amount of practical peacebuilding knowledge and experience. This report is based on a small study on women’s organisations in Liberia, which sought to document the impact of Resolution 1325 on the strategies and activities of women’s organisations in Liberia.
