International Alert regrets the UK government's decision to go ahead with airstrikes in Syria.
Bombing cannot bring peace to Syria. It can only further traumatise a broken population, create more refugees and generate fodder for propaganda from the so-called ISIS.
It is essential that the British government supports local communities and organisations in its effort to tackle the threats posed by violent extremism, here in Britain, in Syria and in places such as Lebanon and Tunisia. Many community-based organisations are already doing good work that has proved effective, but more money needs to be channelled into these efforts.
Building peace is a long, hard slog. Working to strengthen the ability of a growing Syrian civil society and new political class to agree to, uphold and implement a peace agreement is vital.
