International Alert, Europe’s leading peacebuilding NGO, is pleased to announce the appointment of Harriet Lamb as its new Chief Executive Officer. Lamb will take up her post on 16 November.
Lamb is currently the Chief Executive of Fairtrade International, based in Bonn, having previously been Executive Director of the Fairtrade Foundation in Britain from 2001 to 2012. She was awarded a CBE in 2006 in recognition of her efforts in building Fairtrade in the UK.
Pierre Schori, Chairman of the Board of Trustees at International Alert, commented: “We warmly welcome Harriet as International Alert’s new CEO. Among other things, she brings the accumulated wisdom of many years successfully leading international organisations and developing mutually supportive relationships with governments, the private sector and other NGOs, as well as first-hand experience on the ground.”
“I am hugely excited by this opportunity,” said Harriet Lamb. “I have long taken the view that poverty, climate change and conflict are the three big issues of our time, and that all of them are closely connected. The current crisis facing so many people coming to Europe reminds us that peacebuilding and conflict resolution are more important than ever.”
Lamb takes over as Dan Smith steps down after nearly 12 years at Alert. In the interim, Phil Vernon, Alert’s Director of Programmes, will act as CEO.
In 2016, Alert will have its 30th anniversary. Despite real progress over the past thirty years, peacebuilding remains as important as ever, and Alert remains as committed as ever to building a more peaceful future through a combination of grassroots action and policy advice, and by working with a wide variety of others to maximise impact. “I want to take this opportunity on behalf of Alert to thank Dan for his leadership in the past decade and warmly to welcome Harriet as she leads us into our fourth decade building peace”, commented Schori.
