Dan Smith has today announced that he will step down from his role as Secretary General of International Alert. He has been appointed to the post of Director of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).
Smith became Secretary General of Alert in 2003, having previously been Director of the International Peace Research Institute in Oslo from 1993 to 2001.
Under Smith’s leadership, Alert has doubled in size and established itself as the biggest peacebuilding NGO in Europe. Alert now has 18 offices around the world and works with people in over 25 countries to help them build peace and recover from some of the world’s most challenging and protracted violent conflicts. Alert also advises governments, international organisations and companies on how to support peace.
Announcing his intended departure, Smith said: "While I am very excited to be joining SIPRI, I am nonetheless torn because, in leaving Alert, I am giving up a post that has been wonderfully rewarding and in which I have worked with some inspiring people all around the world. Together, we have made progress on some tough and important issues affecting peace."
Smith added: "It has been a matter of great pride to have led the Alert for eleven years and see it develop into the organisation it is today. I believe Alert is capable of a similar step change in the coming years. We have an extraordinarily committed, creative and knowledgeable staff and Board of Trustees, and I know the organisation and its work will be in extremely good hands."
Pierre Schori, Chair of the Board of Trustees at International Alert, commented: "The Board of Trustees would like to thank Dan for his exceptional leadership, dedication and hard work over the past decade. He has shown the vision that has made it possible for Alert to grow and become more effective in the vital work of peacebuilding around the world. We appreciate his outstanding commitment to Alert and wish him all the best in his new role."
