Call for CVs: Peace and Conflict Specialists – Mozambique

International Alert is one of the world’s leading international, independent peacebuilding organisations, with 35 years of experience supporting communities, advising governments, organisations and companies on how to build peace.

International Alert is currently exploring opportunities for peacebuilding in Mozambique and we are seeking consultants to put forward proposals and programmes, depending on funding. We are seeking a range of skillsets (including research/conflict analysis, technical assistance on conflict sensitivity, and peacebuilding project management) from consultants with experience addressing peace and conflict issues in the Mozambican context.

The Peace and Conflict Specialists would be based in Mozambique – either in Pemba or Maputo (although some work may be carried out remotely depending on the nature of the task). They would work closely with Alert staff, partner organisations and others consultants, including on:

  • Peacebuilding project coordination
  • Conflict analysis and research
  • Monitoring and evaluation
  • Conflict sensitivity strategic technical support

Types of Duties and Responsibilities

While the exact duties and responsibilities will differ between assignments, the types of role anticipated are:

  • Supporting the management of specific peacebuilding projects or deliverables – Playing a “hands-on” role in managing specific peacebuilding projects or supporting implementation of specific activities where dedicated additional peacebuilding expertise is identified as needed  
  • Designing and implementing conflict analysis and other research projects – Designing and planning the research approaches and methodology to increase understanding of conflict dynamics and overseeing data collection and analysis.
  • Providing technical support and training on conflict sensitivity, conflict analysis and peacebuilding processes – Identifying training needs for staff, partners and consultants on conflict analysis and conflict sensitivity, and lead in designing a capacity-enhancement plans and relevant training modules. This could include working with/supporting external actors (development organisations, donors, government actors, companies) to mainstream conflict sensitivity.
  • Embedding conflict sensitivity within monitoring and evaluation – Working with staff, partners and consultants to ensure systematic monitoring of context in target areas/regions and reviewing the programme design, monitoring, evaluation and learning (DMEL) through lens of conflict-sensitivity.

Skills and Experience Required

We are looking for consultants with some/all of the following skills and experience:

  • Demonstrable experience working on conflict and peacebuilding issues in Mozambique, particularly in Cabo Delgado/northern Mozambique.
  • Significant experience of managing field-based peacebuilding projects or programmes
  • Experience of applying conflict sensitive approaches to development and/or humanitarian programmes including delivering trainings and technical assistance on these issues
  • Proven success in designing peacebuilding strategies and projects, project planning and impact monitoring 
  • Excellent report-writing, research, editing and oral presentation skills
  • Excellent communication, networking and inter-personal ability
  • Excellent strategic, analytical and problem-solving ability
  • Fluency in Portuguese and English. Other language skills relevant to Mozambique
  • Strong knowledge of conflict analysis and participatory research methods including participatory monitoring and evaluation
