Make supporting Peace your New Year’s Resolution!

Raise money for those suffering from violent conflict

Every year we make resolutions in order to encourage ourselves to do more of the things we want to do, and less of the things that we know we shouldn’t. Even in these days of economic uncertainty, the significance of a modest amount here can make a huge amount there – where people are suffering from violent conflict.

This year, let International Alert help you to make those changes. Linking your goal to helping others can help you stick to it and, more importantly, achieve it.

Get fitter
Many of us find going to the gym boring and can never seem to fit it into our busy lives. Having a challenge or an event to aim towards can be really motivating. In 2009, we have reserved places in the British 10k London Run in July, giving you plenty of time to start training. Or you can get a place at a run of your choice! Last year we had runners taking part in the Venice Marathon and the Nottingham Half Marathon on our behalf.

If running isn’t your thing, then why not set your own challenge? Organise a sponsored walk, swim or cycle, or try something different like the Three Peaks Challenge or an ultimate frisbee tournament.

Spend more time with the people you love
In the cold months of winter, you often don’t feel like going out. Host a dinner party for friends in the comfort of you own home and ask them for a contribution to the night. £10 a head is cheap at the price for a home-cooked meal. Or if cooking is not your thing, a competitive games night always livens things up!

Try something new
Have you always wanted to do a sky dive but never quite felt brave enough? Then 2009 could be your year to try it. Ask your friends to sponsor you for moral support.

Trying something new doesn’t just have to be for adrenaline junkies, maybe you have aspirations of organising a music gig, a poetry slam or a pub quiz… make it happen in 2009, you’ll be supporting our work while having a good time!

Or maybe you’re after a new look? Get that wacky haircut you’ve always thought about but never had a good enough reason to justify it. For girls a daring move, like cutting long hair and maybe even going for a Sinéad O’Connor cut will certainly get people’s attention and friends will happily sponsor your brave move! And for guys, this could be the perfect excuse for growing that beard or moustache you’ve been hankering after. Go on, get your friends to sponsor you and see how long you can grow it for! Your facial hair is guaranteed to spark a few interesting conversations in the canteen about WHY – and you can charm them by telling them about your fundraising efforts.

Give something up and get sponsored doing it
Do you want to stop smoking, drink less alcohol, eat less chocolate? Make it easier and ask your friends and family to sponsor you to give you the extra motivation and encouragement you need to stick to your goal.

Whatever you decide, make supporting Peace your New Year's Resolution.
