Devastation caused by Typhoon BophaOn Tuesday 4th December the southern Philippines was hit by Typhoon Bopha (known locally as Pablo), with the island of Mindanao worst affected.

International Alert has been supporting more inclusive and conflict-sensitive economic governance in the Compostela Valley province of Mindanao, which bore the brunt of the devastation.

Over 1,000 people are reported to have been killed by the storm, with a further 850 people still missing and the death toll expected to rise. The storm has displaced hundreds of thousands of people, with more than 27,000 living in evacuation centres and many more staying with friends and family.

The storm has devastated homes, infrastructure and agriculture, threatening people’s livelihoods and hindering rescue efforts. Many communities are still inaccessible due to mudslides and flash floods, especially impoverished indigenous and rural villages.

Our local partners, the Mindanao Business Council (MinBC) and Balay Rehabilitation Center, are providing tents, sleeping mats, blankets, clothes, medicine, water and food supplies to affected communities. Please support them by reading the appeal at the bottom of this page.
