Stephen joined Alert as Director of Programmes in January 2018. He supports and guides our Programme Leadership Team.
He has a Masters in International Policy and Practice from Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies, USA and an MEng in Aerospace Engineering from Manchester University, UK.
In 2000, he commissioned from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst as an officer in the Royal Corps of Signals. In 2004, he left the British Army to clear landmines on the Mozambique–Tanzania border for a humanitarian NGO.
For the next 10 years, he worked for several United Nations, NGO, donor and commercial agencies in conflict-affected states on peace and security related themes. He has been country manager or deputy for organisations in Cambodia, Central African Republic, Chad, Côte d'Ivoire, Kosovo, Laos, Pakistan, Somalia and Sri Lanka.
He has also advised government institutions in Laos, South Sudan and Uganda, and has worked in support of four United Nations or African Union peace operations.
Before joining Alert, Stephen was a Deputy Chief in the New York HQ of the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations.
Originally from Berkshire, UK and now a Virginian (USA!) at heart, Stephen is a dual US–UK citizen with Filipino heritage, and is married with two children.
