Our Voices has been produced as part of Alert's project Making Women's Voices Heard in Peacebuilding and Reconciliation in Burundi. The film presents the views of Burundian women about what is needed to foster reconciliation and growth in their communities and their country, which emerged from 12 years of civil war in 2005.
During Burundi's conflict, over 300,000 people lost their lives and more than 1 million Burundians were forced to flee their homes. Today, significant hurdles to long-term peace remain. The majority of Burundians, and women in particular, have little scope to participate in the political process. Despite improvements in security, the population has not yet felt significant economic peace dividends; 81% of Burundi's population continues to live below the international poverty line of $1.25 a day.
