International Alert's statement on eastern Aleppo

International Alert, together with our Syrian partners, calls for immediate and concrete actions from the international community to end the hostilities in eastern Aleppo, ensure safe evacuation corridors for civilians and provide vital humanitarian assistance, including food and medicine.

We also urge British ministers, who are set to debate the matter in parliament today, to support a strategy to protect civilians and to hasten a peaceful resolution to Syria’s protracted conflict. We simply cannot stand by in silence while the situation continues to deteriorate.

International Alert is appalled by the reports of continuing and intensifying atrocities being committed against civilians in eastern Aleppo, with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) saying people have "literally nowhere safe to run".

We stand in solidarity with the civilians of Aleppo and our Syrian partners, who are working to support and care for the most vulnerable men, women and children in the city. The scale and protraction of the suffering and devastation is simply unacceptable.
