International Alert launches report on peacebuilding lessons from Northern Ireland for the Nagorny Karabakh context

Independent peacebuilding NGO International Alert has launched a research report titled ‘Mechanisms of Public Participation and Multi-Track Diplomacy in Peace Processes: Lessons from Northern Ireland’. The report is written by a regional group of experts and seeks to engage the societies affected by the Nagorny Karabakh conflict in discussing the conclusions of this comparative study, which was carried out in 2013 with the support of International Alert. As part of the research, a wide range of experts were interviewed in Belfast, Dublin and London, including current and former politicians directly involved in the Northern Ireland peace negotiations, leading journalists, academics, community leaders, and prominent civil society activists from both Catholic and Protestant communities. Five specific research areas formed the basis of the study: the roles of political institutions, official diplomacy and external actors, the diaspora, the media and civil society in building conditions for a lasting peace settlement in Northern Ireland. The report is being distributed in Russian across the region and can be accessed online here. The English version of this report will be available soon. A series of events will take place in April in Azerbaijan, Armenia and Nagorny Karabakh to encourage people in different sectors to debate the authors’ conclusions and the potential implications for building peace in the Nagorny Karabakh conflict context. The report was co-authored by Gegham Baghdasaryan, Avaz Hasanov, Masis Mayilyan, Gulshan Pashayeva and Mikayel Zolyan. The comparative studies led by International Alert form part of the European Partnership for the Peaceful Settlement of the Conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh (EPNK), an initiative funded by the European Union.
