We don’t trust anyone: Strengthening relationships as the key to reducing violent extremism in Kenya

This report argues that strengthening relationships is key to reducing violent extremism in Kenya. The findings are based on a rapid assessment in Nairobi and Mombasa of the factors that have fuelled or mitigated violence, carried in out in partnership with the Kenya Muslim Youth Alliance.

The research found that resilience to violent extremism can be linked to the strength of three kinds of relationships: between and within communities; between generations; and between citizens and the state. Conversely, the existence of stronger relationships has helped reduce the risk of radicalisation and violence.
