Media statement on the abduction of 80 students in northern Nigeria

Media statement from peacebuilding INGO International Alert following the reported abduction of 80 students in Kebbi state, northern Nigeria:

“We are saddened by the unprecedented rate of kidnappings across Nigeria, compounding conflict characterised by tensions, trauma and human rights violations. Gender-based violence has increased dramatically, with young girls and women being abused by their abductors. The unjust stigmas that come with being taken damage the life chances of young Nigerians. International Alert calls for a peaceful resolution to conflict by all actors. Action must be taken to address the poverty, community grievances and climate impacts in northern Nigeria that are fuelling the increase in kidnappings for ransom. Investment in reintegrating students in ways that support their physical and psychological safety must also be urgently prioritised.”
