Africa Climate Week: International Alert calls for conflict sensitive climate finance

This week’s Africa Climate Summit will see the continent’s leaders make ambitious pledges to combat climate change. Peacebuilding organisation International Alert is warning that if these commitments are to succeed, they must take conflict into account.

Fragility and instability pose an ongoing risk to climate adaptation projects. Climate action taking place in areas affected by conflict therefore needs to consider conflict prevention and sensitivity from the outset.

Alert is calling for policy-makers, development financial institutions and funders to:

  • Mainstream conflict sensitivity through climate action
  • Ensure that projects are locally-led and work for the benefit of local communities
  • Facilitate and incentivise cross sector collaboration and knowledge sharing.

Notes for editors

International Alert will be sending a delegation to participate in the Summit and the wider events that form part of Africa Climate Week.

Betty Mutesi (Regional Director for Africa) and Emmy Auma (Country Director for Kenya and the Horn of Africa) will be attending in Nairobi and are available for interview or comment on request.
