In order to continue our peacebuilding work, we are entirely dependent on grants and donations, and so your support is vital in ensuring that we can reach those most affected by violent conflict and influence those who are best placed to maintain peace.
Help us to build peace. Your support will make a difference.
Help us to build a lasting peace in 2009!
2008 was a busy year for Alert and our peacebuilding work. From Alert staff meeting with Kofi Annan in January over the Kenyan riots to current on-the-ground work in the DR Congo with those striving for a peaceful solution. At Alert, we hope for a better future in 2009, and will strive to work on our successes from this year in Liberia, Nepal, Uganda and elsewhere.
Please help us help others look forward to peace in 2009.

Payroll giving
Payroll giving is an easy, tax efficient way to give, which allows employees to donate to any UK registered charity of their choice directly from their salary. For a higher rate taxpayer, payroll giving is the ONLY way that a charity can automatically receive all your tax on your charitable donation.
For example, if you pay tax at the basic rate (22%) it will only cost you £3.90 to donate £5. If you are a higher rate taxpayer (40%) it will only cost you £3 to donate £5. So the charity gets more and it costs you less.
The scheme is very flexible, allowing you to change the amount you donate from month to month or week to week, depending on how often you are paid.
To start donating via payroll giving, talk to your Payroll or Human Resource department who will set up the donation. If your employer does not offer this scheme, suggest that they introduce one - it is easy and inexpensive to run - ask them to contact the Charities Aid Foundation on +44 (0)1732 520019. |

We are the UK’s leading peacebuilding organisation helping millions of people affected by violent conflict to lead a peaceful existence. Building peace is a vital investment in the future – an investment we want you to be a part of.
Business and Peace Fund International Alert is one of the few independent organisations making the link between business and peacebuilding.
The Business and Peace Fund develops corporate awareness of the role of business in regions of conflict and instability, and to engages businesses to support in building or maintaining peace in these areas.
In 2007 Lloyd’s Charities Trust supported International Alert with a special award of £50,000.
Fundraising at work
Fundraising at work is a great way to boost your company’s reputation; and it also provides a great opportunity for colleagues to get to know each other better.
You and your colleagues can fundraise while you're at work - by organising collections or getting sponsored to do whatever you can think of. Don't forget to ask your company to match the total that you raise.
Enter a challenge event, like running the Great South Run (maybe in fancy dress?), taking part in a sky dive, or participating in a pub quiz.
Making a gift in kind
Companies and individuals can make an invaluable contribution to International Alert by donating their products and services, equipment or facilities.
Could your organisation provide us with conference/meeting venues, office equipment, goody bags at events, promotional or raffle prizes, staff training opportunities etc?
By saving International Alert’s resources, more of the money we raise can go directly to our projects.
Giving shares
Making a donation of Company shares is a tax effective way for you to make a significant donation.
This type of giving is not only is it simple, it is a great way to enhance Corporate Social Responsibility.
We are happy to explain our work at your corporate events or to interested staff.

Trusts and foundations
Donations from trusts and foundations are vital to the ongoing development and success of our work. More than a quarter of our income currently comes from trusts and foundations in the UK and overseas. Their generous support enables us to address the root causes of violence and bring about lasting improvement in some of the least stable regions of the world.
Many trusts choose to support our general fund. This income is extremely valuable as it enables us to direct our resources to the projects of greatest need and priority. We recognise that some trusts prefer to support specific project work and our fundraising team is able to work with individual trusts to find appropriate projects that match their funding criteria.
We are always keen to develop relationships with new trusts and foundations. If you are a trustee or have links with a trust or foundation that shares our aims, we would be happy to hear from you. Please contact the Fundraising Team on +44 (0)20 7627 6800 to find out more. |

Legacies
The origins of most violent conflicts go back years, if not decades or centuries. Most of these conflicts take place in developing countries, especially the very poorest ones. Many are long-lasting and will take years to heal.
By including International Alert in your will, you will be making a valuable contribution to peace by enabling us to continue supporting communities affected or threatened by violent conflict. Your legacy will help us build a peaceful future for individuals and their families recovering from violent conflict.
Why make a will?
Making a will makes things easier for those tending to your affairs after your death, and it ensures that, after all the relatives and friends you love are provided for, your legacy can also contribute to the causes that are closest to your concerns. Leaving a gift in your will ensures that the memory of these concerns and hopes live on.
How to leave a legacy gift
You can leave a gift to International Alert in your will in three ways:
- A residuary legacy (all or part of the net value of your estate)
- A pecuniary legacy (a specific sum of money)
- A specific legacy (a particular item of value, such as jewellery, property or shares)
Whatever you leave, however large or small, will help to create a world where conflicts are managed and resolved without violence.
We recommend that you consult a solicitor before making or amending your will. He or she will be able to ensure that your will is legally valid and that everything you need to cover is included.
For more information please contact the Fundraising Team on +44 (0)20 7627 6800. |

Get involved
From running to organising a dinner party - you can take part in an exciting event while raising vital funds for our work.
Ways you can get involved:
|
Run for Peace, Run for Alert! – The London Marathon and the upcoming British 10K
|
|
| Swish for Peace! – A clothes swap night in support of our work
We recently held a very successful Clothes Swapping fundraising night on June 2nd at Juno Bar in Shoreditch with the help of personal stylist Tracey Sinclair.
Tracey kindly joined forces with us in order to raise vital funds for PEACE. Sanex, Radox and LUSH also generously supported us with donations so that we could give great goody bags to all the attendants, which meant that all the money raised could go towards our work in Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Caucasus.
We have had great feedback for this fun and environmentally friendly evening, which was not just about sustainability and raising funds but also about bringing people together and respect for others, in line with our message of Peacebuilding. It provided a good platform to inform people of our work with women’s groups, especially in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda.
Thanks to everyone who attended and helped make this event a success; watch this space for our next one!
Details of the event can be viewed at Swishing.org and on the Meetup page of Tracey Sinclair.

Volunteering at music festivals around the UK
We’re back in 2009 with more opportunities to volunteer for International Alert at some of the best music festivals this summer. The Workers Beer Company raises money by running beer tents at festivals and we have limited places for servers to work in the bars.
The catch? While you work, we earn.
You get:
- Free entry to the events you work at
- Access to an enclosed secure 'village' area where Workers Beer Company staff camp at events
- Two free drinks (usually given as staff tokens) per person per 6 hour shift
We get:
- Your pay at a rate of £6.50 an hour
Registration for 2009 is now closed but please email us at fundraising@international-alert.org to register for 2010
I would definitely recommend volunteering at a festival for Alert - I met lots of great people, all the other volunteers were really friendly and good fun. We had a fantastic time and I made some good friends. And the best of all, I got to see one of my favourite band - the Red Hot Chili Peppers - all for a good cause. I'm really looking forward to it again next year - it's a great way to spend a weekend, and it didn't cost me a penny...see you there?!

Organise your own fundraising event
It could be a live music event…

Or the challenge of a lifetime…
Over the August bank holiday, Nick Hankins and his team - James and Pete Hankins, Ash Rathod, Phil Mounteney, Jo Durham, Alex New and Paul Quayle - completed the Three Peaks Challenge to fundraise for International Alert. In total they have raised over £3,500 – a fantastic result.
The challenge involved climbing the highest mountain in England (Scafell Pike - 978m), Scotland (Ben Nevis - 1344m) and Wales (Snowdon - 1085m) in succession. This is an impressive 26 miles of walking/climbing, and around 10,000 feet of ascent and descent.
It is a real endurance test with each mountain proving a gruelling mental and physical challenge. We hope the team feels a huge sense of achievement at having completed the event, and for raising valuable funds towards Alert’s programmes.
We made it back intact and all in all it was a great experience, and even if being utterly drenched, fatigued and freezing doesn’t float your boat you do get a great feeling of achievement and some free grub along the way. Thanks to everyone who sponsored us, it really did cause us as much pain as we all thought it would and hopefully will go to do more good and create a lot of happiness for the people who International Alert help – Nick Hankins
Or anything that works… Have you always wanted to organise a speed dating night for your single friends, host a dinner party, or just get rid of all your old junk in a car boot sale?! Be it pub quiz, or tea party – get involved and organise an event to help us raise vital funds.

Whether you chose to get involved in your University’s RAG and select International Alert as the benefit charity, or decide to organise your own event, you’ll have fun figuring out what you want to do. Be it a bungee jump, food fair, bar crawl or poetry slam… you’ll be supporting our work, while having a good time.
