The fourth Conflict Ideas Forum will explore the realities and myths associated with the international military withdrawal in Afghanistan in 2014 and its consequences on local conflicts within the wider region.
As international forces start their withdrawal, Afghanistan’s South Asian and Central Asian neighbours are deeply concerned about the political stability and security of the country and the region. The post 2014 scenarios are most often framed in the context of Afghanistan’s internal stability, however, the withdrawal is also likely to impact the region as a whole and could well have a negative spill-over effect on local conflicts within the region. The Conflict Ideas Forum will attempt to explore the likely regional consequences of the international military withdrawal in Afghanistan in 2014 with a view to identifying possible peacebuilding interventions.

The third Conflict Ideas Forum will explore the changing nature of Gulf engagement in Middle East and North African states over the course of the Arab Spring. What has the impact been prior to, during and since the Arab Spring? What opportunities are there for strengthening the impact Gulf states have on peace and stability? How can the peacebuilding community better engage and collaborate with these increasingly important and influential actors?

The second Conflict Ideas Forum looks at the issue of large scale, violent conflict that neither fits formal and familiar definitions of “armed conflict”, nor fits in the mandates of international institutions that have the task of managing and mitigating. The focus is in particular on criminal violence. The forum will discuss how peacebuilding can contribute to understanding the broader, interconnected nature of violence.

The first Conflict Ideas Forum looks at peacebuilding in Europe, exploring the peace and conflict dynamics at play in a time of crisis across the region. The forum will seek to identify the various pressures on Europe as a peacebuilding model, how these pressures are changing and emerging responses. In addition, the forum will define the resulting implications for peacebuilding policy and practice.
