Gender and Peacebuilding Initiatives in West Africa
This three-year project, beginning in 2007, aims to implement the mandates of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security by simultaneously supporting women’s grassroots peacebuilding initiatives in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone and advocating for a gendered focus on peacebuilding at the regional and international levels. The intention is to strengthen networks of women’s peacebuilding organisations while communicating their experiences to policy makers.
This project has the following objectives which will be achieved over a two and a half year period:
- To assist women’s civil society organisations in identifying how to address shared priorities related to Resolution 1325.
- To enhance the capacity of women's organisations to influence stakeholders at all levels to integrate gender and support women’s political, economic and social participation in peacebuilding.
- To provide comparative learning and context specific guidance to local, national, regional and international stakeholders for a more coherent and strategic approach to implementing Resolution 1325.
It is hoped that the project will reach the following outcomes:
- Women’s groups will become more aware of their rights and responsibilities
- Civil society organisations will engage with the intergovernmental bodies in the sub-region and influence their policy on human security
- There will be an increase in the observed implementation of Resolution 1325, including equality in governmental representation and increased participation in peacebuilding processes such as the Truth and Reconciliation Commission
