Sri Lanka

We have been working on a variety of peacebuilding initiatives in Sri Lanka since the 1990s. Our recent work has focused on local business leaders, aiming to develop the positive contribution that the private sector can make towards economic, social and political stability. That work is focused around three key areas:

The Business for Peace Alliance – Alert supports a network of Chambers of Commerce from across the island which brings divided communities together, and overcomes mistrust; creating business links and common purpose in the search for peace.

© International Alert Sri Lanka First represents the interests of the country's key industries – Violent conflict brings unpredictability and higher costs to business, endangering livelihoods and undermining development. Alert help them to grow their work.

© International Alert Promoting Corporate Social Responsibility – Sri Lanka's business community have been working with Alert to develop their understanding of the impact conflict has on business, and how Corporate Social Responsibility can be used to help shape the private sector's response.

The conflict context

Sri Lanka has been in a state of violent conflict since 1983, when tensions between the Sinhalese majority and Tamil separatists erupted into war. Twenty years of fighting followed, in which tens of thousands died. The cease-fire agreed between the Government of Sri Lanka and the Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in 2002 still holds but peace talks are frozen and it is generally accepted that there is a situation of ‘no peace no war.’
