Tuesday, 2 August, 2011
International Alert is pleased to invite you to attend the second in a series of Peace Talks on Tuesday 27th September in Brussels on "The Post-Soviet World: 20 Years on the Road to Peaceful Statehood".
The relatively peaceful and speedy transformation of the Soviet system and the disintegration of the Soviet state were celebrated by many as a defining moments of late 20th century world politics. Twenty years later, where do we stand? The discussion will look at the continuing struggle for peace and statehood in post-Soviet states and at the role of the EU in supporting conflict resolution and the development of democracy.
The panel will take the form of free-flowing discussion – no lectures, plenty of participation.
Speakers will include:
Gunnar Wiegand, Director of Russia, Eastern Neighbourhood, Central Asia and OSCE, European External Action Service
Craig Oliphant, Senior Adviser at Saferworld, former Head of Eastern Research Group, UK Foreign Office
Natalia Mirimanova, Co-Director of the Crimea Policy Dialogue Project
Dan Smith (Chair), Secretary General, International Alert
