The tomato trader challenge

What if your commute to work meant crossing a border carrying all the goods you needed to sell and dealing with constant harassment along the way? How much more difficult would your journey be?

This is the reality for women traders crossing the border between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Rwanda and Burundi every day. We train them to stand up for their rights and hold border officials to account.

There has been a 60% drop in cases of physical and verbal abuse and extortion at the border since our work began.

Take on the tomato trader challenge

Could you cross the border without losing your tomatoes? Step into Maman Chantal’s shoes, a tomato trader in DRC, and see how you would cope with her typical journey. Take on the challenge below.
