Working at International Alert

International Alert employs over 80 people of 30 nationalities both in our London offices and in the regions where we work. Most are full-time staff, but we also engage consultants, interns and volunteers.

Some of these staff are part of our regional programmes in 20 countries or territories, working closely with partner organisations in conflict areas. Others focus on research, policy and advocacy on a range of conflict-related themes. They are backed by London-based financial and administrative departments and by our fundraising and communications teams.

To find out more about the people who work for Alert, visit our staff pages. Our staff is from over all the world and we value the diverse range of experience that this brings. International Alert strives to be an equal opportunities employer and we welcome applications regardless of race, gender, disability or sexual orientation.

Volunteers at International Alert

Volunteers are valued members of staff at International Alert, providing essential support to our programme teams. We encourage them to develop their skills, abilities and experience through working with us for a period of six months. Usually this will involve help with general administration and routine tasks such as filing, photocopying, preparing correspondence and collating information, but there may also be opportunities to volunteer in areas such as research and events organisation.

Person Specification

The main qualities that we are looking for in a volunteer are:

- Good standard of education
- Interest and/or experience of peacebuilding issues
- Research and writing skills
- Computer literate
- Languages are an advantage
- Good team-player
- Commitment to the aims of Alert

Volunteer and International Alert Responsibilities

Volunteers are expected to work a minimum of 20 hours per week for a minimum of 6 months

Alert will ensure that the volunteer has an agreed job description and that he or she is given a proper induction. All volunteers are given regular supervision from the staff member responsible, which should provide an opportunity for both volunteer and supervisor to feed back on progress and discuss any problems.

Expenses

We cover the costs of travel to and from work and, for each day that a volunteer works 4 hours or more we also pay for lunch (up to £3.75 per day).

Volunteers are entitled to Job Seeker’s Allowance and Housing Benefit and continue to receive National Insurance contribution credits provided that when they register they declare that they are actively seeking employment and don’t receive any payment for the work that they do. They must be willing and able to attend job interviews or take up a job on being given 48 hours notice. Volunteering at Alert should therefore not affect these benefits.

If a volunteer is seeking paid employment, their Alert supervisor can be approached to supply a reference.
