Senior Training Officer: Conflict Sensitivity
Salary: £34,002 p.a. (more for an exceptional candidate) + benefits
Based: London

We are looking for a creative individual with the ability to lead innovation and contribute to impact. As well as excellent training/learning skills, you have demonstrable experience in project and budget management and have significant experience in a conflict-affected country. You have the skills to play a key role in our training and learning activities; develop innovative approaches to conflict sensitivity, and strengthen our efforts to influence the policies and practices of donors and development agencies through training and advocacy.

Interns at Alert
Alert has a number of graduate interns who spend a six months internship with one of our programme teams. These are full-time positions and work ranges from providing support to programme staff with administrative work to research and organisation of events.

We very much value the work of our interns and try to ensure that their skills and abilities develop during their time with us. They are given the opportunity to gain insight into how an international NGO operates and to learn about the peacebuilding sector and Alert’s work within it. They receive an allowance of approximately £12,000 per year pro rata.”.

Eurasia Programme Intern
Salary: £13,202 per annum (pro rata) + benefits (approximately £800 - £900 each month after tax)

Interns work in our London offices and are provided with an allowance and the opportunity to gain experience in an international NGO – one of the leaders in its field.

We are looking for an intern with a high degree of personal initiative and drive. Specifically you will be contributing towards different aspects of implementation and administration of the Economy and Conflict project in close cooperation with the Senior Programme Officer. Through your work you will gain skills and knowledge pertinent to peacebuilding work and gain a deeper understanding of economic dimensions in peacebuilding and the conflict context in the South Caucasus.

VOLUNTEERS

Communications volunteer

International Alert, a leading peacebuilding organisation based in London is looking for a volunteer to support the Communications team. The main focus of this role is to update a publications database and help re-structuring Alert’s photo library. The role will include a significant amount of data entry and recording but will also offer opportunities to gain exposure to a wider range of communications work. This may include, for example, media relations and online communications.

Commitment:
Three days a week (Monday to Friday for a minimum of two months).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Update and maintain the publications database.
  • Develop International Alert’s photo library through Microsoft Sharepoint (training will be given).
  • Multimedia related administration.
  • Maintaining the media contacts database; daily scanning of the media, maintaining the media coverage database and compiling the monthly coverage report.

Skills and competences:

  • Good communication skills.
  • Good attention to detail.
  • An understanding of new media and web.
  • Happy to work on own initiative.
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Creativity and the ability to contribute useful and innovative ideas/suggestions.
  • Experience of developing and editing content for the web.

Expenses:
This is a voluntary position. Alert can cover the costs of travel to and from work and for volunteers working a minimum of 4 hours per day, a lunch of up to £3.75 a day will be reimbursed. Only those with the right to live and work in the UK should apply.

Volunteers are valued members of staff at International Alert, providing essential support to our programme teams. We encourage them to develop their skills, abilities and experience through working with us for a period of six months. Usually this will involve help with general administration and routine tasks such as filing, photocopying, preparing correspondence and collating information, but there may also be opportunities to volunteer in areas such as research and events organisation.

Person Specification

The main qualities that we are looking for in a volunteer are:

  • Good standard of education
  • Interest and/or experience of peacebuilding issues
  • Research and writing skills
  • Computer literate
  • Languages are an advantage
  • Good team-player
  • Commitment to the aims of Alert

Volunteer and International Alert Responsibilities

Volunteers are expected to work a minimum of 20 hours per week for a minimum of 6 months

Alert will ensure that the volunteer has an agreed job description and that he or she is given a proper induction. All volunteers are given regular supervision from the staff member responsible, which should provide an opportunity for both volunteer and supervisor to feed back on progress and discuss any problems.

Expenses

We cover the costs of travel to and from work and, for each day that a volunteer works 4 hours or more we also pay for lunch (up to £3.75 per day).

Volunteers are entitled to Job Seeker’s Allowance and Housing Benefit and continue to receive National Insurance contribution credits provided that when they register they declare that they are actively seeking employment and don’t receive any payment for the work that they do. They must be willing and able to attend job interviews or take up a job on being given 48 hours notice. Volunteering at Alert should therefore not affect these benefits.

If a volunteer is seeking paid employment, their Alert supervisor can be approached to supply a reference.
