Freelance Copy Editor
Based: London

International Alert, a leading peacebuilding organisation based in London is looking for a London-based freelance copy editor to support the Communications team.

Key responsibilities:

• In-depth substantive editing and proofreading of publications, web content and other print material
• Rewriting material where required
• Coordinating the production of reports where required
• Working with authors and designers to produce high-quality documents and meet deadlines where required.

Skills and competencies:

• 3-5 years of experience in substantive editing
• Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills
• Reasonable availability to turn documents around quickly
• Previous editing experience of documents in a related field
• Must be able to attend meetings at the London office as and when required.

Major Donor Manager
Based: London

Salary : £39,000pa (negotiable for an exceptional candidate) + benefits

We are looking for an experienced Major Donor manager to establish a programme of Major Gifts at International Alert, the UK’s leading peacebuilding organisation. This will be a new area for Alert and while there are some existing contacts, this position will suit a self-administrating and independent professional who has the ability and emotional maturity to seek out opportunities and manage the major donor process through to successful completion.


You will be responsible for the construction, development, implementation, and monitoring of a new Major Donor strategy. You will have at least 3 years proven experience of soliciting Major Gifts from individuals with the capacity to make five and six figure gifts, or management of a portfolio of high level clients, as well as experience of developing strategy and programme for high value individuals. You will have a resourceful and proactive approach to your work and the ability to develop the case for support, identify prospects, cultivate, convert and manage relationships with major donors. This post also requires a combination of excellent interpersonal, negotiating, influencing and written and verbal communication skills and experience.

You will have a flair for networking and be target-driven as well as committed to using your articulate charm to influence the debate on funding for peace. As an excellent fundraiser you will understand that demonstrable results are key and not just the activity.

Senior Fundraising Officer
Based: London

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced fundraiser to take on a new challenge with responsibility for private fundraising (excluding Major Donors). You will be part of a new team and will take the lead on developing strategy, diversifying income streams and meeting targets.

You will be confident in taking the initiative on new areas including events, direct marketing, trusts and foundations and corporates. You will be experienced in more than one of these areas and have a demonstrable talent for delivering results. Success will come with your ability to create opportunities and transform them into successful fundraising ventures.

Manager - Good Governance and Peacebuilding
Based: Liberia/London

Salary : £38,928 p.a. (more for an exceptional candidate) plus excellent benefits

International Alert is recruiting a Manager to work on Good Governance and Peacebuilding, within the West Africa Programme.

The successful candidate will have responsibility for:

  • Developing strategy and obtaining funds to start implementing new programming on Governance in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.
  • Conducting research and advocacy on the role of the World Bank and UN peacebuilding institutions in Liberia.

..and thereafter, managing the project and its resources.

In order to be successful in this role, you will have a talent for analysing complex issues, for developing persuasive practical ideas, and for putting yourself in the shoes of the person or people with whom you are communicating so that you understand the world as they see it. You also know how to build strategic relationships with NGOs, government and private sector entities and individuals in the sub-region.

With a relevant post-graduate degree, (preferably in a subject related to peacebuilding), and at least three years experience of working in a peacebuilding environment, you also have solid experience of devising strategy and raising funds. You are skilled in grant, financial, and project management and can also draw on your strong analytical and research skills to raise awareness and understanding of Good Governance. You write clearly and concisely in English, and speak and understand French well enough for most professional situations.

Senior Programme Officer – Research and Advocacy
Based :
Kathmandu, Nepal (You must be a Nepali national or have the right to work in Nepal)

Salary : 66,960 NRs per month (negotiable for an exceptional candidate) + excellent benefits.

You will play a central role leading and delivering Alert’s work with international inter-governmental institutions in Nepal as well as supporting the strategic development of Alert’s broader Nepal Programme.

With post-graduate studies in international relations or political science, or equivalent experience, you will lead policy research and advocacy for Alert’s international institutions reform programme in Nepal. Your work will build understanding of the degree to which international inter-governmental institutions affect conflict and peace dynamics in fragile contexts. With experience of writing evidence-based briefings, position papers and reports, you bring knowledge and experience of Nepal together with an understanding of how the World Bank and UN operate in conflict-prone and conflict-affected countries. You bring a deep understanding of how research and advocacy can be used to effect change and have finely honed research and communication skills. You communicate fluently in English and are familiar with Nepali and other national languages. You bring the dynamism necessary to work as part of a transnational team based in 4-5 countries.

Specifically you will:

  • Develop and conduct research projects examining the operations of the World Bank and United Nations and their role in peace building in Nepal;
  • Draft timely evidence-based advocacy reports, briefings, position papers, articles, etc;
  • Build strategic relationships with key international institutions, government officials and local partner organisations to contribute to Alert’s in-country and international advocacy;
  • Support and coordinate the development and delivery of workshops and trainings and their supporting materials;
  • Design proposals and raise funds to further Alert’s programme for institutional change

Interns at Alert
Alert has a number of graduate interns who spend a six months internship with one of our programme teams. These are full-time positions and work ranges from providing support to programme staff with administrative work to research and organisation of events.

We very much value the work of our interns and try to ensure that their skills and abilities develop during their time with us. They are given the opportunity to gain insight into how an international NGO operates and to learn about the peacebuilding sector and Alert’s work within it. They receive an allowance of approximately £12,000 per year pro rata.”.

Communications Volunteer
Based : London

Expenses : This is a voluntary position. Alert can cover the costs of travel to and from work and for volunteers working a minimum of 4 hours per day, a lunch of up to £3.75 a day will be reimbursed.

International Alert, a leading peacebuilding organisation based in London is looking for a volunteer to support the Communications team. The main focus of this role is to assist the Communications Team with online communications (including social media), multimedia-related administration and media relations. The role will include a significant amount of data entry and recording but will also offer opportunities to gain exposure to a wider range of communications work

Commitment: Three days a week (Monday to Friday for a minimum of three months). .

Key Responsibilities:
Develop International Alert’s photo library through Flickr and Microsoft Sharepoint (training will be given).
Multimedia-related administration.
Maintaining the media contacts database; daily scanning of the media, maintaining the media coverage database and compiling the monthly coverage report.
Helping Alert developing its online presence, through social media and other online tools.

Skills and competences:
Good communication skills.
Good attention to detail.
An understanding of new media and web.
Happy to work on own initiative.
Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office.
Creativity and the ability to contribute useful and innovative ideas/suggestions.
